Qingming Festival, a day to commemorate our ancestors

Qingming Festival is a tombing-sweeping day which comes in the growing season when fragrant flowers and trees flourish, grass sprout out of the earth. However,‘rains fall heavily as Qingming comes, and passers-by with lowered spirits go', as a well-known poet of Tang Dynasty, Du Mu wrote in one of his poems called 'Qing Ming'. Now you might know why it is so rainy and cloudy in Dallas on this weekend ? Duang~ Because it is just the time during Chinese traditional Qingming festival!😄😄😄 Haha~ I am just kidding~

The Introduction to Qingming Festival

The Qingming festival is a traditional Chinese festival on the 15th day from the Spring Equinox,usually occuring around April 5 of the solar calendar. It is time for tending graves and honor ancestors. Qingming is also a solar term denoting that it is a time for people to go outside and enjoy the greenery of spring time.

The Origin of Qingming Festival

Qingming festival originated from Hanshi Day on which people only eat cold food for memorizing a prince's faithful follower, Jie Zitui, who cut a piece of flesh from his own leg and boiled it for his starving master, Chong'er in the Spring and Autumn Time of Ancient China. But the establishment of Qingming Festival is credited to the Emperor Tang Xuanzong in AD 732. So from then on, the observance of Qingming Festival was inherited and continued to be one of essential Chinese cultures.

The Custom of Qingming festival

It is a time for celebrants to remember and honor their ancestors. Around Qingming, the whole families gather together on one day and set off to the grave sites in the early morning. People normally prepare food, white wine , tea, incense, chopsticks and paper money in advance to offer in front of their ancestors' tombs. After sweeping the tombs, families laid out all the oblations, burnt incense and joss paper, poured the white wine they brought as well as prayed their ancestors for all the best of their family.

Riverside Scenes at the Qingming is a panoramic painting by Song Dynasty artist Zhang Zeduan who depicted the bustling scene at the capital, Bianjing in Song dynasty during Qingming festival.
